Best of Photos - DRC 2010

Here are a select few of my recent trip to DRC. If you are interested in checking out the expanded selection, still drastically pair down from the original 500 photos, you can check out DRC photos here.
I never get tired of this view, even after eight hours in a car! South Kivu, DRC on the road to Chambucha.
I love the diversity of cows around the world!
Girl accessing water in our newly built gravity fed water filtration system.

The bridge to Chambucha, which goes out often and needs repair.

Miel washing her face in our new water point.

Mosque in Kisangani.
Typical house in rural DRC.
Taking goods to market.

Giorgio & Miel on bridge over Congo River.
Bridge over Oso River as we left le zone rogue.
DRC flag over Lake Kivu.
Laundry time in Bukavu. Love the remnants of colonial architecture.

Lovely Lake Kivu, access from our office/guesthouse.
Stuck again.
DRC, one of the most beautiful places on earth.
Morning on Lake Kivu.

Enjoy and leave comments to tell me which are our favorites so I can take more next time!

Miel

By the way, what kind of infection is causing the puffiness in the children?

'Drea - Thanks for your comment. Glad you like the photos.

The swelling is causes from severe malnutrition that is called marasmus. Marasmus involves inadequate intake of protein and calories.

Children may be affected by micronutrient deficiencies, which also have a detrimental effect on growth and development.

Malnutrition affects every organ of the body, and can be seen visibly when skin starts to wither away and deteriorate.

I didn't include the saddest and worst cases I saw on that day, as I didn't know if people could hack it. I included the couple of shots just to educate a bit about the effects of malnutrition and remind people of how lucky they are.

Best,

Miel
